IQ Toyz & Games celebrates its 25th anniversary this year! When previous owners were ready to retire, David and Deborah saw an opportunity to continue a legacy of wonder and learning at play. The retired Air Force couple met when in the military. They always talked about having a business after retirement and the toy store was the HAPPIEST option! Nearly 5 years later the shop is still a community staple with a wide variety and passionate owners. Read on to hear about how IQ Toyz puts the Heart in Hartville.
What kind of toys do you love having here?
The shop carries a variety of educational and creative toys, games, and puzzles with a focus on staying away from electronic options. They have a large selection of Ty beanies, both seasonal new and like new, at regular, not collector, prices. Deborah, a physical therapist, understands the importance of toys for everyone. They carry larger-print playing cards and other toys that cater to those with special needs.
What do you love most about running a toy store?
Toys are HAPPY products! The selection of both new and like new retro and vintage toys is a favorite area of the shop. These bring a smile to people’s faces whether they just walk through and see things from their childhood or make a purchase. Customers leave with their own memories of days gone by ready to share stories and experiences with the next generation.
What are some hidden gems or lesser-known toys you recommend parents check out?
Check out their bookshelf board games – Classic games, like Monopoly, packages to look like books on a shelf! And for little ones, they have constructive eating utensils shaped like construction equipment – mealtime fun for sure!
Did you have any favorite toys growing up? How do they influence your selection today?
David’s favorite toys were Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars but loved a variety of everything. Are you a puzzler? You’ll have a friend in Deb. She loves large puzzles that challenge her and the shop carries a great variety.
If you could be any toy for a day, what would you be?
Deb would be a cuddly Ty stuffed animal and David would be a Kendama, a Japanese wooden toy played for skill and concentration by kids and adults with worldwide competitions.
Do you hold any special events or workshops in the store for kids?
