Memorial Day is the unofficial kick off the the flea market season here in Hartville. With 12 acres of space, 100+ indoor shops, and over 1,000 outdoor vendors for the 75th annual Memorial Day at Hartville MarketPlace and Flea Market there is surely treasure to be found by all.
If you are traveling to the area for a weekend of picking be sure to explore the Discover Hartville website to plan your visit!
Where to Stay
Check out Clearwater/Jellystone Park– bring in your RV or rent a cabin- or head to the other end of town and take a spot at Cutty’s Sunset Camping Resort. Of course you can always go with my style of “camping” and book a stay at Quail’s Covey Bed and Breakfast 😉
When you visit the flea you will notice new construction to the east of the Hartville Kitchen. Ground broke for a Comfort Suites to be opened late this year/early 2015. Other nearby hotels are Cambria Suites in Green and Hampton Inn & Suites in North Canton.
Other Places to Pick
There are so many shops in the area, selling upcycled furniture, antiques, housewares, and clothing. We asked five local business to share the top items to “pick” in their shops.
Here are their suggestions:
Hartville Thrift Shoppe
Run by volunteers and the local Mennonite churches, the non-profit Hartville Thrift Shoppe is a popular picking spot in town. Manager, Maria Marana suggests checking out their jewelry, fabric, and board games, for your craft projects and love of all things vintage. DHV Tip: The shop will be closed Memorial Day but open 9:30a-8pm Thursday and 9am-5pm Saturday and Tuesday. Be sure to stop by The Front Porch Store next door and check out the beautiful plant selection.
Twice is Nice Consignments
This “One Stop Family Shop” carries a little (or a lot!) of everything for the whole family. Pickers will definitely want to check out their book room, and painted and unpainted furniture. For the crafty picker, owner, Rose Banner, suggests checking out their great fabric selection. Find them in the big red barn on SR 619. DHV Tip: This shop shares a parking lot with a few other local shops, including Mack’s Bakery. You know you deserve a cupcake after all your treasure hunting!
R Grocery Outlet
When we say picking for food we’re not talking about heading to the strawberry patch. R Grocery Outlet carries product that is near or past expiration date, discontinued items, and product with damaged packaging. Yogurt, organics, and bulk detergents and soaps are customer favorites. The shop recently started carrying produce! DHV Tip: R Grocery has a second location inside Hartville MarketPlace. While some products overlap, visiting both locations is worth the trip. The main store will be closed on Memorial Day but the MarkekPlace location will be open.
Best Bib and Tucker– fashionable consignments and handmade market
This shop is located in Historic Downtown Hartville tucked behind Harville Chocolate Factory in the renovated Schumacher Lumber building. Locals and tourist alike love their casual, work, and formal wear and accessories. To score the best deal pick up some of their designer purses and clothing. DHV Tip: The shop is holding their annual Spring Fash Bash through the end of May where most items in the shop are 20% off! Note: they will be closed Memorial Day, but open 10am-7pm Thursday and 10am-5pm Friday and Saturday.
Hartville Mercantile
This great hodgepodge of a shop is located on Sunnyside Street which runs parallel to SR 619, just to the south. This garage is filled with a mix of vintage glassware, awesome lighting, Fiestaware, and retro kitchen items. Owner, Kathy Butcher also mentioned that she has a large selection of American Muscle die cast cars in the shop now. DHV Tip: Hartville Mercantile will be open Memorial Day. Be sure to check out the traffic light in the front window.
